戊辰戦争で北海道に援軍に向かった熊本藩士３５０人が千葉県勝浦市川津に通りかかった際に暴風雨に襲われ、汽船は難破してしまった。川津の住民が救助活動にあたったが、１３０人の犠牲者が出てしまった。
官軍塚は水難者を供養し、埋葬したという話。
